與舊同學網談為何用Linux
嘿...... 隨著Linux的急速發展,我很久沒有和他人談這個題目了,可能有點生疏了。
(Q-Question, S-Sammy) Q: well... y use replacement (Linux) instead of the original one (Windows) ? S: use free software instead of use pirate software, free of charge (not really in some case), freefom to choose, freedom with open source. S: But you may consider in the view of commerical sector, if a trading company purchase a close-source software (eg. account software), and they want to add a feature/do customisation for a function they need, they only can purchase from original vendor, this's called "vendor lock-in". If the software vendor provides poor software, then you cannot change/select the supplier of your software. And fast growth of Linux/Open Soruce is because of its open, everybody have chance to get their businesses/position in the field. S: A good example is "IE", I saw quite a lot Windows users select Firefox to replace their IE Q: for commerical tailor made application, it is, i see your point. however, it is not the case of all home user. But how about standard packages? all you using on your pc is standard packages. S: For home users, we can think: will we buy Windows XP Prof + Office 2003 ? For OEM at Golden, it is $2600 totally. We won't buy it because it is expensive, but no other choice, this is vendor lock-in. On Linux, OpenOffice.org are using Open Document Format.
S: it is possible for home users to choose their software in such Open Standard and Open Source Software.
