Request for Release of Real-Time Flight Information Dataset via data.gov.hk

I am writing to request the release of real-time flight information datasets for Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) through the data.gov.hk portal. As one of the busiest airports globally, HKIA handles a significant volume of flights daily. However, detailed, real-time data on flight schedules, including arrivals, departures, delays, and gate information, is not readily accessible to the public.

Making this data available as an open dataset would greatly enhance travel planning for passengers, improve transparency, and support third-party developers in creating innovative travel solutions. Additionally, such data could serve as a critical backup when the Airport Information System experiences downtime. For instance, human-input data from spreadsheets could be exported to CSV, converted to JSON, and uploaded to maintain service continuity.

I kindly urge the Airport Authority to consider publishing real-time flight information in a machine-readable format (e.g., JSON or CSV) via data.gov.hk. This initiative would align with the government’s open data policy and provide significant public benefit.

Thank you for your attention to this request. I look forward to your positive response.

Yours sincerely,
Sammy Fung
