文件自由日 Document Freedom Day

繼軟件自由日（Software Freedom Day）多年來推廣自由軟件（Free Software）後，針對開放文件的文件自由日（Document Freedom Day）也在今年推出了。

因為剛剛才知道有 Document Freedom Day，而只有數日時間，我盡可能也希望安排一個簡單的小聚，讓大家輕鬆地交談使用和交換電腦文件的經驗。

DFD 2009 旨在提升大眾重視文件格式和開放標準對每個人每日生活的重要性。開放標準是一份可讓大眾使用和檢閱，來定義文件規格的認可文件。文件規格的任何部份不能依賴任何非開放的格式或協定。開放標準保障政府、商業機構和社群大眾的文件資料不受限制地使用。而相反地，舊的專有文件格式，往往受到軟件升級或被淘汰而令到舊有的專有文件不能再使用。

引述「知識產權關注小組」對 Open Document 的說明介紹：

Office 的文件檔案內容有格式，就如同我們寫信件一般，依著格式來寫才能方便閱讀。而開放文件格式 (OpenDocument / ODF)，就是一種公開的格式，任何人都知道怎樣閱讀。與之相對的，就是封閉文件格式，例如微軟的 MS Office 文件格式，就必需有微軟援權，才能知道怎樣去閱讀其文件。

使用開放文件格式不等於必需使用 OpenOffice，而是任何程式都可以支援的文件格式。此格式的確立，是為了令不同平台、不同軟件之間的文書檔案可以完全互通，令檔案不再受單一程式限制。

舉個例子，某公司或政府單位現在使用 A 公司的 Office 軟件、使用其特有的封閉文件格式，如果有一天 A 公司倒閉了，其他公司的新系統不再支援這 Office 軟件，那麼這些文件要如何讀取呢？這必需要花很多人力物力才能破解封閉文件格式。但如果使用開放文件格式，則任何軟件都可以輕易、準確地讀取，A 公司只需簡圖地改用其他支援開放文件格式的 Office 軟件就行了。

It is a bit late and rush to know and organise a small-size local meetup of Document Freedom Day in Hong Kong, to let people to share their experience on use and sharing of computer documents. I just got launch of DFD from Software Freedom Day mailing list.

March 25, 2009 – first Document Freedom Day

DFD 2009 aims to raise awareness on the importance of accessible document formats and open standards in everyone’s day to day activities, as metioned on SFD mailing list.

Open standards are agreed document definitions which are available to the public to review and use. They cannot depend on formats or protocols that are not open standards themselves. Open standards protect governments, businesses and the wider community of computer users from vendor and data lock-ins. Such lock-ins obstruct users from exercising their full freedom in software and the information they access.

We can imagine that some of old proprietary documents are not accessable again after old document programs are retired or upgraded to new version.
